Power Transformer
Partial Discharge testing of power transformers is carried out using electrical PD measurement as per IEC 60270, where Online monitoring can be done using the UHF method, which detects electromagnetic signals generated by PD activity. Acoustic emission testing is used to locate the source of PD inside the transformer by detecting sound waves produced during discharge. Dissolved Gas Analysis is an indirect method that identifies PD by analyzing gases generated in transformer oil. These methods help in early detection of insulation defects and prevent major transformer failures.

Power cable
Online partial discharge testing of power cables is performed while the cable remains energized and in normal service. It uses sensors such as HFCT (High-Frequency Current Transformer) or UHF sensors to detect PD signals generated from insulation defects in the cable, joints, or terminations. This non-intrusive method allows continuous monitoring, helps identify active defects under real operating conditions, and reduces the risk of unplanned cable failures without requiring a shutdown.

GIS testing
Partial discharge testing of GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) is carried out mainly using online monitoring methods because the equipment is sealed and operates at high voltage. The most common technique is the UHF (Ultra High Frequency) method, which detects electromagnetic signals produced by PD inside the SF₆-filled enclosure through embedded or external UHF sensors. In addition, acoustic emission sensors may be used to help locate the PD source, and TEV (Transient Earth Voltage) measurement is applied for surface discharge detection on external enclosures. These methods help identify insulation defects such as particle contamination, protrusions, or voids, enabling early corrective action and reliable GIS operation.
